Bluff Summer Internship 2018

Today Alex and Tyler presented their progress and next steps for their research progress to the weekly SDM meeting.

Today after meeting with Alex and John, we attended the first CRD (Computational Research Division) seminar series for intern students. The talk was given by Julian Borrill who is the Group Leader of the Computational Cosmology Center, a Senior Scientist in the Computational Research Division at Berkeley Lab, and a Senior Research Physicist at the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley. He talked about "​High Performance Computing For Cosmic Microwave Background Data" and showed pictures of the Big Bang . In the afternoon at the mandatory weekly meeting for students, we listened to presentations about emergency management, safety, health resources at the lab, library resources. As the last talk, Sally Winkler & Kayla Wolf, graduate students at UC Berkeley, gave students advice on maximizing their internship experience. The two students run the  Double Shelix Podcast about women in STEM and inclusive science.

Yesterday we all attended Geri Richmond in conversation with NPR correspondent Joe Palca talk. This was part of the LBL Director's Distinguished Women in Science Speaker Series http://diversity.lbl.gov/women-in-science-speaker-series/. The talk was informative and funny. Even if Geri is a chemist, all scientist could relate with her experiences.  I think she was the third person who talked about the importance of undergraduate research and how it shaped her career.

We are a team from Youngstown State University spending 10 weeks at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab this summer. The members of the team are students Alexandra Ballow and Tyler Leibengood (Mathematics and Physics Majors) and Alina Lazar, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems We are joining efforts with the lab as part of the Scientific Data Management Group, working with John Wu and Alex Sim. The students are supported by the undergraduate internship program at Berkeley Lab called BLUFF and I am sponsored by the Department of Energy through the Visiting Faculty Program.
